I've only gotten through a couple of hours or so, but it's already knocked Anachronox off of the throne of 'best console-style RPG ever'.
I even hate anime-style artwork (well, at least where human faces are concerned, it is not even remotely fucking possible for people to draw in a style that isn't 95% eyeball/5% mouth anymore? I know you have to make eyes expressive, but for fuck's sake every single anime character is starting to look like every other anime character in my mind), yet this game's truly unique atmosphere more than makes up for that. I absolutely love the overall art style.
What is there to complain about? Um... the music is great, but unfortunately, in Silent Hill 3 tradition, the soundtrack disc that comes with the game seems to completely neglect all the brilliant amibent stuff, in favor of playing the actual "songs" that sound a little too much like one another (almost exclusively organ-based tracks with slightly differing melodies/drum patterns). It's still interesting, but I don't have nearly enough ambient music in my collection so I always am hopeful when a game makes good use of it... and so far I've always been disappointed when the soundtrack that comes with the game largely ignores it.
But when "not-quite-up-to-potential soundtrack is included" is the only complaint I can think of, I have to imagine that my $50 was well-spent. While I have no idea if it can hold up over time based on personal experience, I haven't heard/read a single thing to indicate that it starts dragging. The demon system is cool, the story is interesting even though it does start off in disjointed fashion, there are hints here and there of a pretty decent sense of humor, and best of all!!!!!! The game does away with the console-RPG cliche of "every spell takes about thirty seconds to animate". Nope, everything in this game, no matter how great-looking it is, flashes on and off like a machine gun. I can't put into words how much I like the game solely on the strength of that little detail alone. |
