| This site, wherein the comments are funnier than the pix, made me remember that Balls Of Fury passed without the most distant Caltropsian whimper over the summer.
Probably I'm the only one on the planet who liked Balls Of Fury. Everyone else was left unmoved, or worse, they felt pandered-to in a way that Transformers couldn't touch. Somewhere between Christopher Walker's sleazy grandmaster schtick (the entire theaterful of people around me were tired of it within two minutes) and the boat full of squealing male sex slaves, I fell in love. Oh my god! That schtick is great! I don't care what all the commoner clowns thought about it: it was oily, overblown, and riddled with sexy references, hence perfect. Plus: bears more than a passing resemblance to my favorite kind of mackin'. There was a lot of regrettable WOMYN HATIN' but not nearly on the scale of say Perry Bible Fellowship, and besides - squealing male sex slaves! But actually the best part is right at the beginning, when the fat, frowsy, permaloser hero is attempting to overcome the limitations of dinner theatre. Frustrated and depressed, he assults a dude straight up with a ping pong ball. How is this different than the very similar set-up in Blades Of Glory? Because it is not a puking moron out of control (slapstick)! It is a totally sane guy driven to the edge by incessant marginalization (satire)! And then: unintended consequences! So it rides the drunk/stupid/resentful line much closer to the excellent Shakes The Clown and much further from Ben Stiller movies. Anyway, I thought it was really funny. I hope the fan edit monks take out all the bits with Maggie Q (playing almost exactly the same character as she did in Die Hard 18,395) and replace them with Christopher Walken's cut scenes. |
