It might be shocking to see me disagree with Josh "Grumah" Cable for once, but King of Kong was great.
You go into the movie expecting to see a bunch of the nerdiest nerds nerd out for 90 minutes, and you more than enough of that. The inside look at the hilariously retarded classic gaming microcosm hierarchy is where the movie really shines. Donkey Kong itself is only about 10 minutes of the film, and it's an interesting 10 minutes, so there shouldn't be many complaints about that. The bulk of the complaints seem to come from the inaccuracies of the events portrayed. Don't worry about this. Even if the filmmakers left some details on the cutting room floor it doesn't change the words that come out of the mouths of Billy Mitchell or his disciples, which are embarrassingly embarrassing. So just watch the movie and then enjoy the copious bonus materials: the internet. It's fun to follow up on the people in the film, and Twin Galaxies has an entire forum for their press releases to clear up discrepancies. Discrepancies like this:
The New Hampshire Donkey Kong player knew there was a pall of controversy surrounding Steve Wiebe's Donkley Kong score, so he offered to check out Steve Wiebe's machine for Twin Galaxies. Though Twin Galaxies didn't initiate this visit and had not planned out this visit as a "verification strategy," Twin Galaxies did become involved by giving the Donkey Kong player instructions on what to look for while viewing Steve Wiebe's Donkey Kong machine.
So you see, they didn't INITIATE the investigation of the Donkey Kong machine, they merely became involved once a private citizen decided to do his own investigation. >:( It's extras like these that you don't get with Grey Gardens.
