Overall, though, I liked the film. The decision to paint the real-life competition as one big meta-game of Donkey Kong - with Steve as Mario and Billy as the elusive gorilla - was a stroke of genius, even if they had to fudge the numbers a little to make it work. And if there's one thing I love to hate, it's a
href="funny arcade">community of nerds.
There is a forum called CAG run by one of the gamers in King of Kong, and there's currently a Missile Command thread. I'm going to summarize it briefly:
- A new Guinness book is printed in the UK, and mentions Mr. Awesome's MC score as being valid and on harder settings.
- Walter Day is (apparently) selling Twin Galaxies to other interested parties.
- Walter Day tells Robert Mruczek to go find something else to do (paraphrased) and deletes his account on Twin Galaxies, turning all of Robert's posts into "guest."
- Robert tells the people on the CAG forum this.
Fair enough. Everyone involved from start to finish is a dork, including me for typing that up. And we'd all admit it. Whoo-hoo.
Yeah well, all of this is blown away by the fact that there is a guy out there - Scot (sic) Rubin - who proceeds to read the posts verbatim on his "radio show." You have to check this out, it's dynamite. And of course I mean, it's a train wreck of horrible fucking radio and I couldn't believe the guy wouldn't stop. He's not giving summaries, he's not paraphrasing -- he's doing text-to-speech on what people are saying about a 30 year-old arcade game score. I am utterly amazed. This will never, ever be topped.
Of course, when he does give his analysis on the subject, here's what he comes up with, after saying that Mruczek has nothing going on in his life:
Scot Rubin wrote:
"Robert sees the new book mentioning (Mr. Awesome's) name. His head asplodes. Hyuarrrragahhh. I mean, literally."
Fucks up the use of literally and follows it with an 8-year old Strongbad reference. Goes on to read *every* *single* *word* of every virtually every single post on page three of this thread. You couldn't make this up.
