and then there's the last Alone in the Dark game going on about how revolutionary their flashlight/shadow effects were. Not only was the game awful, they were blown away by Silent Hill 2 being released right around the same time.

This was awful when Grim Fandango did it. You've already committed yourself to a 3rd person perspective, why the switch the immersive crotch cam for inventory?
