In some sense, even having a "space" background and calling the pieces "ships" is chrome. A space 4x game is exactly the same as a land 4x game if you call the planets "cities" and call the ships "tanks".
Moreover, you can just turn the whole thing into a checkerboard and call the cities "X"s and call the tanks "O"s and you have a completely abstract, chrome-free 4X game which fundamentally is the exact same game as Civ4 or GalCiv2.
But the space "chrome" adds to the game because conquering planets "seems" more fun than conquering Xs with your Os.
And to me, the 3d starmap chrome adds further, because you're even more immersed in the "space" theme.
Same game as the Xs and Os, though. |
