It sounds like a little man cutting down tiny forests with a cute little chainsaw in there. When I tap the PSU he gets confused or dizzy and stops for a minute (having a tiny sourdough bread break, I guess), but then it revs back up and we're sawing logs again. NOT IMMERSIVE. Surely I'm not the only one that's encountered this. Can I just open the PSU up and clean it out, or do I need to install a new PSU fan? Or (gulp), a new PSU?

This happens all the time with crappy fans: case, PSU or otherwise. What you want to do is shut the computer off and remove the PSU. Hold it so the fan is horizontal and try to turn the fan with your fingers: if it is not perfectly smooth and effortless through multiple revolutions the fan is hosed. Most of these crappy fans have (or in your case had) liquid lubricant in the center which was held in by a sticker (?Interrobang!). "Waitaminit, stickers are bonded with petrochemicals, and the lubricant is made of petrochemicals, so isn't that a lot like storing brake fluid in ziploc bags?" Why yes it is, aren't you a good little Doo-Bee.

I'm going to try something new (for me) and frame this as good news: Unless you purchased and built this PC from parts and you know for a fact that your power supply came right from Heaven to power your gaming addiction, that little bastard fan probably just saved you a lot of money. Crappy power supplies have crappy fans, and uber machines deserve GOOD power supplies with good fans, or at least decent ones. A good power supply is cheaper than a good stick of RAM, cheaper than a chip, cheaper than a good motherboard, and cheaper than a good HD or DVD burner. In fact you'd be hard pressed to spend a giant pile of money on a power supply and get better than you could for like $50, assuming you're not running a server.

Over the last year I've only bought a few power supplies. My very old one died and took out my HD last January, so I ran to MicroCenter and grabbed one of these:

Of course the PC in question is in my bedroom and I don't really need a ngiht light so as great as that PSU is I'm warning you right now about the annoying light. You can adjust the fan which is great because it fucking howls, but it does keep the case cool.

Another one I got was this:

Same thing you're thinking, right? Wrong. I had a 2U case and I needed a PSU for it, the fact that it was a short case meant I couldn't have fans on the top or bottom of the PSU. This turned out to be more difficult to find than I expected, and so your cancer-ridden friends and relatives' patient information is now stored on a machine powered by glowy blue LEDs. Also:
I can use the case to keep cans of beer cold, the airflow on this thing is sick. We put the cover on the case and the weird noise we thought was the fan was actually the front grate whistling, which is just not right.

Anyway I'd say poke around newegg, look for 'quiet' and at least 480w with SATA and move on with your gaming life. It's not worth trying to fix your current one and putting the rest of your machine at risk.
