I ask: why? Movies are different from books. Okay, I get that. And the books were sometimes boring and stupid. Okay, I get that too. But how can anyone argue that the following scenes were an improvement over the version in the books?
--Why did Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas see Frodo and Sam heading out on the opposite river bank and then mysteriously decide to not help them? The books: shit hits the fan, Boromir dies, and where the fuck is Frodo? Maybe carted off by Orcs, we better go look for him. The audience still knows that Frodo and Sam are hoofing it to Mordor, so I don't understand why this scene was changed.
--Why did Theoden go to Helm's deep essentially to take refuge? In the books, Theoden led his army to Helm's deep as a clear and obvious act of war: the badguys wanted it and he was going to defend it. In the movie, he's heading for a bunker to weather things out or something. One or two lines of dialogue could have changed this scene completely.
--Why did Faramir take Frodo all the way back to Gondor? Okay, forget that. The book explains why this is stupid, but the movie can take liberties I guess. Here's the real question: why did Faramir let Frodo, Sam, and Gollum go after he personally saw Frodo try to give the Ring to a FUCKING RINGWRAITH? Didn't we already establish that the Ringwraiths are agents for Sauron and report everything back to him? Isn't Faramir letting the guy who almost singlehandedly lost the entire game for his team keep on trucking into the lair of the enemy? What the fucking fuck? There is no book equivalent to this scene, this is just gibberish that Jackson invented.
--Why did we have the extra worg scene in the second movie? This was weird, especially given that there was a cool battle scene in the first book that was cut out of the first movie. Gandalf burning somebody with magic and coolness like that . . . it's been a while so I can't recall what the deal was. Also, why did Galadriel get shoehorned into the second movie? All of these weird add-nothing scenes just meant that the movie couldn't get to the Ents and left all that to the third movie, which was already overburdened with too much to accomplish. We didn't get the battle for the Shire in the third movie because Peter Jackson was too busy fucking around in the second.
Ha ha! I sold you a crappy product! This isn't the extended edition of my complaints, it's the regular version with a behind-the-scenes bonus! Because these are the ones that I just can't comprehend at all. The other complaints I have can fairly be placed in the nitpicky category since they relate to consistency errors (the Last Alliance of Elves and Men! except for Helm's deep!) and less major stuff that was changed from the books.
Behind the scenes bonus: I wrote this from the server room where it's very cold. My hands were almost numb LOL!!!#!@ |
