Which still sounds a lot more feasible than trusting two leprechauns (did they really all have Irish accents in the book?) to walk straight into the heart of the enemy.

They couldn't at least fly the entire fellowship to the outskirts of Mordor? Is middle earth really smaller than the map makes it seem and it really wasn't that far of a walk (movie makes it look like Wraiths leave mordor right after Bilbo puts on the ring and they arrive at the shire/weathertop within 24 hours) ?

Gandalf had already gotten a lift out of Isengarde, so the eagles were around. Since he was so against going to Moria, why not FLY over the mountains?
