Totally agree with the Fellowship's invulnerability. They tried to make it seem harder for them by adding more close shaves etc. but of course that made it worse. The orcs were laughable in the first movie. They really needed more hobbits/elves to die on the way, but I suppose that's a flaw with the book. I remember my last attempt at the great novel was when I was maybe 10? and revolved around the adventures of 10 unkillable MEN because who wants to hear about sissy girls?

That said, Eowyn was awesome, and twenty times more interesting than Arwen. They should have made the relationship between her and Aragorn the main (unfulfilled) romance, and kept Arwen as the mostly unseen other woman. Then we wouldn't have had to put up with elven mind-melding and Aragorn dying-but-not-really (there's enough of this in the book, they had to add another one?). Faramir was also great, but his hooking up with Eowyn on the spur of the moment was lame. There's a bit more about that in the extended version but it still doesn't work. This could have, again, been much better with less Arwen.

Other improvements:

- Yeah, the army of the dead were a shitty resolution. Show a couple of scenes where they get their heads knocked off and go down, and make them just a deciding factor rather than unstoppable, and that bit might have been great.

- The CGI battles were okay except for when horses are mowing down orcs. When they ride out of Helm's Deep it looks incredibly fake. The dudes are barely waving their swords, so the horses would have to be made of very sharp edges to flatten the crowd like they do. The same thing happens at Minas Tirith after the first satisfying crunch when the armies hit (though I did love that bit. The visceral feel of that whole battle was great).
