From what I remember, the initial version suffered from:
- stupid .ini settings that resulted in weird controls (some setting apparently made sense if you're playing on an XBox controller but not a mouse, I forget what it's called) and text displayed in a 65,536-point font
- crap performance, not that the patch was an earth-shattering improvement but the initial version ran like utter shit even on massively powerful machines, and the game simply doesn't offer a graphical payoff that can explain such inconsistent framerates
- you can't help but feel that Ion could have offered better textures, but then again the performance might have been even worse so it's not like that would have prevented the avalanche of complaints
So yeah, "disappointing" is a lot more accurate than "one of the worst ever". I'll gladly take DX2 over SiN, Trespasser, Rune, Mortyr, Shogo and Blood 2 (or all the pathetic FPSs Erik had to review for Gamespot) any day of the week, never mind I like it as much or more than most of the "brainless" shooters like RtCWolfenstein, Soldier Of Fortune, Timekillers, Painkiller, and Serious Sam. And hell, these are just FPS games that DX2 is as good as or better than - need I bring up all the shitty games in other genres that we've suddenly magically forgotten about in an attempt to get overwrought about DX2? |
