Sure, it started stronger than it finished, but that's every horror movie. It's hard to sustain tension once you realize the thing lurking in the corner of your eye is just aliens/ghosts/Satan again. Imagine if halfway through every episode of House they solved the medical mystery, then instead of finding out they were wrong about the medical mystery and having to start over the second half was just them running up and down the halls screaming. Ain't nobody sticking around for that. Maybe if the girl doctor had to take off all her clothes for some reason.
So the plot was silly. At least it was the good kind of silly, the kind where you can see where they're going even as you can't believe they're going there because it's too dumb. There's a scene around the middle where Julianne Moore deadpans "tortured to death by mountain witches" that had me giggling, if they could've sustained that level of oh no she didn't for the rest of the movie we'd be talking instant classic. I guess you could argue no one would ever say that and none of the people act like people, but so what? People are overrated. These are characters played by actors, and oh my god Julianne Moore is a great actor, especially compared to John Cusack in the piece of shit I watched last night. (You know I love you John, I see all your shitty direct-to-video movies, but your talent is about as narrow as it is deep.) And talk about a girl doctor I'd like to see take off all her clothes for some reason! Maybe you don't appreciate it because you supposedly have a girlfriend you keep telling us about, but I would watch Julianne Moore's ruby red lips read the phone book.
Here's my summary of 6 Souls: too long, approximately the right level of self-serious, whole second half is an anticlimax, only sporadically stupid enough to enjoy, Julianne Moore is hot, beautiful cinematography, production value out the ass. We're talking two and a half, three stars out of five here. Hardly a travesty. Okay, now you come back at me, and we can have a good old unnecessarily vicious Caltrops slap fight over this flop movie neither one of us particularly cares about. I'll start escalating now: your girlfriend doesn't exist and neither should you, you fucking waste of liver. |
