It sounds as if you would like a shot at a film career.
Yes. You think I would have gotten a shot by now. New York and Los Angeles just don't get me.
Are there many roles for moustached hat wearers?
Yeah, well, good stand-up doesn't mean good actor or vice versa. Good at stand-up is like being good at group therapy.
But I'm giving Gallagher props. He had a literate and likeable set in the early and mid eighties, but all anyone wanted to see was the sledge, which was itself a great device back before it became a charicature. He wasn't a negative or critical guy, he had his piece to say about gender, language, politics, Reagan, and it was a groovy piece, but he got overruled by the sledge.
I put him in a category with Weird Al Yankovich and Bobcat Goldthwaite as Gags Wagging The Comic. Weird Al and Bobcat were smart guys. They each made a movie that was a really smart movie; I laugh at the Life Aquatic lovers who never saw Shakes The Clown, because you'll never convince me that Aquatic was better than Shakes in any category except production budget size. UHF was a solid, sharp, affable comedy that holds up beautifully. But nobody gives a shit. All they care about is the gag. The watermelon, the spastic voice, the song parodies.
It's funny that Gallagher is bitter now, though. Funny and sad. Bobcat did Space Ghost and wore tragic 80's comic clothes, Weird Al is still pushing out albums and doing concerts. Gallagher plays Green Bay, but now he loves the slopebrows who took his sledge and left his insight. Stockholm Syndrome. |
