Zseni's fugue aside, if the best we can come up with is a pointless parallel world branching off from a subway car, and perhaps suggest that the party is Gehenna, the point at which three characters begin their lifetime of punishment... well then maybe this story is just well written but mediocre after all. At a certain point you have to say the the story is either too shallow or too opaque to have more meaning. I still might write an email to Harry Harrison, editor of Best SF 71 and ask him what the eff. (I can't find any Malzberg contact info)
Mark my words though, you'll think of this story again from time to time. |
