A running theme will be that any game that attempts to mimic a gamepad + buttons is a to-be-avoided pile of shit.
Battlezone is an arcade game from Atari that uses a black and white vector monitor with overlays to display green and red. Vectrex style! The controls are two joysticks that go up and down, which - I've never been in a tank, but as far as I am concerned, the way you move them is either UP and DOWN (Battlezone) or KEYS 1 TO 104 (Steel Battalion). Peter Hirschberg created Vector Tanks, which looks much nicer than Battlezone ever did.
The controls are inspired - rather than try to mimic a gamepad, you just move your thumbs up and down to mime the original control scheme of Battlezone. You press in the center of the screen to shoot. Perfect.
If you don't like Battlezone - and I am not a huge fan - then this game will do nothing for you. But then, you're probably dead inside anyway.
