I'd quote the Bard's Tale rather than Civ II there, except that the story for BT really is forgettable. However, that's because it was a product of its time -- you're properly motivated by the manual, and they couldn't stick all the text in that they would like because the bunch of us on PCjrs and Amiga 500s and so forth were being dragged down by the Apple II and C64 owners and the 360K disk limits. So you have to kind of give it credit for the text that was there out of the actual game. Plus, the hint book for the first one is the best strategy guide ever, and I am prepared to say that it might be the best piece of gaming-based literature ever.
