The first thing I did after I got home and realized my hand towels were missing was to retrace my steps back to the laundry room and search the machines I'd been using. Nothing! Then I searched all the other machines, which was easy because they were all completely empty. Then, I checked behind the machines, in the trash, and anywhere else they might have ended up. Finally, I switched off the lights and spent some time peering out the window, looking for any suspicious characters loitering outside the building. It was while I was standing quietly in the dark that I heard footsteps coming from the hall. I spun around and at the same moment an old lady walked in and nearly jumped out of her skin when she saw me. Of course I apologized for startling her and quickly excused myself, but not before noticing her empty hands. Since I'd already established there were no clothes in any of the machines, I had to wonder what exactly she was planning to do in the laundry room without any laundry - and why she was so disturbed at being discovered! Unfortunately, here it is four hours later and I still can't think of any way I could have broached the subject of my missing hand towels without coming off like some kind of racist. It certainly didn't help that I had to pick yesterday to shave my head :( |
