The 1980's version itself is a remake. Like today with his, when John Carpenter's remake released, the B&W original was considered a classic. That one doesn't hold up today, like a lot of films. My dad says it scared the shit out of him, at the time: kid screaming in the theater cracking up the adults. Anyway, we had to read the original short story. Then watched both films based on the short story. Interestingly, John Carpenter's film closely follows the original short story, while the first film completely rewrote it. I remember the professor droning on and on how science fiction was about the times it was created, rather than the future. In his snooty professorly way, he wanted to come up with boring cold war thesis. I just wanted to talk about crazy Wilfred Brimley in the freaking closet. |
