for a lot of the reasons this thread touched on as far as people being retarded and irrational. Plus lots of stupid cliches.
- The show centers around an every-man who's calm, sane, rational, intelligent and is basically the pillar, meanwhile everyone around him acts like an idiot and gets people captured, killed, or almost captured or killed. FOR EXAMPLE:
- Dude has 3 sons, one of which is enslaved by the aliens. His oldest son spots the enslaved son and goes back to the group and declares FUCK IT, MAN, I'M GOING TO GO GET HIM RIGHT NOW AND I DON'T CARE IF I HAVE TO DO IT ALONE. Because that's exactly what would happen. A retarded teenager would decide he's just going to ride his dirt bike straight into an alien army, submachine guns akimbo, and save the world. And of course the father has to literally wrestle him to the ground and heartwrenchingly remind him I CARE ABOUT BEN TOO.
- There's a scene where a group uses a dog to draw out an alien mech so they can attack it, and this group also has some kid who's like 13 years old. Of course when it looks like the mech is about to blow away the dog the kid runs right out in the open and starts screaming COME BACK, MAX. COME HERE, BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course that happens. And of course everyone almost dies.
- A small group assembles to go get back the main guy's enslaved son. While they're searching for him, one of the other guys spots his own enslaved son and of course he starts screaming and runs right out in the open to go grab him. Almost getting everyone killed. Of course that happens. Everyone's an idiot. And of course there's a scene later where the guy tearfully apologizes. Sorry, man, it was my SON. ;_;
- There's a grizzled army commander coordinating a group of about 350 people, some fighters, some civilians. Of course he's an asshole who has a dim view of the public and regards them as a burden. Of course he places the fighters in higher esteem because they're the ones doing the REAL jobs. They camp out in a neighborhood and he lets all of the soliders sleep in the houses while the civilians sleep outside in tents. OOH, WHAT A BASTARD. There's even a shot of him narrowing his eyes and taking a grizzled sip out of an aluminum cup.
- There's a scene in one of the houses where the oldest teenage boy of the main character and his girlfriend are having a moment in one of the rooms, and sure enough dad barges in. "OOPS, SORRY." "DON'T YOU EVER KNOCK?!?!?!??!" *wah-wah*. Parents are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO lame. See, it's funny because even though they're caught in the middle of a horrible alien invasion and everyone's dying or being enslaved they still have those mundane, every-day, human moments.
- There's a doctor who's the human center of the show, and she butts heads with the army commander to stick up for the PEOPLE. Also: this aliens. One of the aliens is captured and she spends time trying to communicate with it because it probably has THOUGHTS and FEELINGS and if we just try and learn from it maybe we can figure out what it wants!
- There's another doctor who's the polar opposite of the first, and spends his time trying to provoke the captured alien because it's just some FUCKING monster that wants to KILL US.
- Of course there's a murderous rogue gang that's living out the alien invasion drinkin brewskies and killin bugs, and they don't give a SHIT about no resistance.
The exact moment I gave up on the show was when there was a group being assembled to go get dirt bikes to make scouting easier. The main character's 8-year old son shows up, having snuck away from school, and wants to come along. No way, says dad, and has him escorted back inside. I knew I couldn't take it if, later in the episode, the dipshit son sneaks away from the camp and shows up at exactly the wrong time and almost gets everyone killed.
Seriously, if you can get free access to this show try watching a few episodes. I guarantee you'll be able to call almost every single moment before it happens. Maybe even exact lines. It's like a paint-by-numbers TV series. Anybody here could have written this as a parody of a good show, only Falling Skies isn't joking. |
