Propaganda spread by nerds awarding themselves symbolism points. What separates this from any other horror movie? You're describing Blair Witch and even The Grey more than any zombie movie.
Exactly what you say in the next paragraph:
Zombie movies are scarey because the outcome is a fate worse than death. You're eaten alive and forced to exist as a mindless decomposing cannibal until someone blesses you with a bullet to the head. Then you have the threat of that happening to loved ones who you're then forced to kill. At least Jason and Michael Myers are done with you after the knife.
The difference is that whether or not you become a zombie, they put you face to face with the decayed corpse you WILL become whether or not you survive this ordeal. They're not some horrible product of H.R. Giger's imagination, they're not predatory beasts that may or may not get you, they are an image of your inescapable future.
Anyway, if you're filming with the intended effect of giving your movie the feeling of a nightmare (I can't run fast enough!) slow zombies are infinitely superior.
