About half of them are necessary tweaks that should've been on by default (enemies move faster, hit harder, resist damage, etc.) and the other half are gimmicky bullshit (enemies drop bombs when defeated or randomly become insubstantial). Why were these prizes I had to grind for and not options in a menu? Better yet, why didn't they just put a "hard" mode on the initial difficulty select? Judging by the leaderboards, only a tiny fraction of players actually made use of these things - I wonder if that was because they honestly didn't want them, or because they didn't feel like putting in the work necessary to balance the game for themselves, and just assumed the developers would take care of that on their own?
Regardless, I was delighted to find the combat holds up, even if the levels were even less interesting the second time through. If I were reviewing this for GamePro, I'd give it the face with the little half-smile. |
