I've heard it called everything from a platformer to a roguelike to an adventure game (some of those by people who should really know better) and I think it's about time somebody set the record straight. It's not a platformer because the only platforming you do is walking along one really big platform (aka the floor), perhaps falling off if you get careless - there's no jump button or Bionic Commando swinging arm, and next to no penalty for falling. It's not a roguelike because the levels aren't randomly generated, enemies aren't randomly placed, combat (let alone movement) isn't turn-based, death isn't permanent, and resource management isn't remotely a concern. It's not an adventure game because there's no exploration and no puzzle solving to speak of (some believe the way terrain falls into place ahead of you obviates the need for a map; the fact is, Bastion doesn't need a map for precisely the same reason Call of Duty doesn't - every level is just a string of spaghetti stretching from start point to end point, with semi-frequent bulbous parts where you need to kill all the enemies to progress).
So what is it? Easy. It's a 3/4-overhead perspective shooter with copious destructible scenery, most similar to Origin Systems' Crusader: No Remorse. I can think of only two reasons why this isn't obvious to anyone who plays it: one is that your character is some kind of Precious Moments munchkin instead of the typical Rambo or Boba Fett clone, and the post-apocalyptic dystopia you're blasting through looks more like Hyrule than Blade Runner or Mad Max; the other is that gameplay requires so little of your attention (at least on the default difficulty) that a distressingly large number of players likely have no conception of what, precisely, they were doing for the six hours they spent with it. |
