Alright, on reflection I think it is worthwhile to examine my motives. What's interesting about WWI to me?
1) The shocking combination of 19th century mentality with 20th century equipment. It's easy to make fun of the Chinese army in the 60s, ready to drop nuclear weapons on their enemies and then ride in on horses. But that's almost what these guys were doing.
2) What I consider to be the crimes committed by both sides, the delusion and insanity at the top levels of the command structures, and how they prevented their civilian governments from knowing how out of control they and the war had become. Remember: journalists were never permitted to cover the war in any meaningful way. Communications, or the almost total lack of it in all aspects -- or perhaps in some case total perversion of it -- is a defining feature of this conflict.
3) . . . I'm abandoning this numbered list already.
I really want to visit the places where humanity collectively lost its sanity and thought it was OK, and to wonder about the nature of warfare and civilization. Hunter-gatherers murder each other left and right, at a much higher rate than the worst American cities. When they fight other tribes, it's really nothing like what nations of citizens do to each other, and I don't mean scale. Is warfare in a way a replacement (perhaps overall an improvement?) of that mode of living? There are lots of other questions to consider too, about technology and the future and . . . stuff.
Anyway, your mom. :( |
