I don't know why people here are embarrassed to admit what they liked if they purport to occasionally have insight into what a GOOD game is instead of merely lambasting what they think is bad. What, you're all afraid that the misanthropic herd will cast you out because they don't approve that the 10% of things you like isn't the same as it is for them? You fuckers have been saying horrible shit to each other and the world in general for how long now in an effort to toughen up or something, and this still happens.
Fallout 3 was fun enough, I guess. It just seems like the bar for choice and consequence has been set by the series and yet it's still fucking low:

Whoa, disagree! How many people in games have problems easily solved by either moving to a new town or by apologizing to someone? How many people in games even HAVE real problems?
Every single element of drama in New Vegas could be negated if the protaganist simply moved out of Las Vegas and the greater Las Vegas area. I don't consider those real problems, laudable. Not after what you've been through. I appreciate your stiff upper lip, but this is the Internet.
That's the end of the scale Avellone mentioned to anchor New Vegas to. The other end is that the problems are pretty serious and it all depends on YOU, the LONE WANDERER, to push back the super-mutants who snack on people and make the BoS a functional entity by dragging them out of their bunkers and leading the charge against the Enclave next to the huge Optimus Prime cameo.
After the franchise focuses for all previous games on how the protagonist starts out as everyman and then gets involved in pretty serious shit, Fallout 3 has the seriousness immediately jump to the top of the Richter scale and New Vegas feels too thin to properly get going in terms of drama. ICJ put it better than I did.

The only part I remember liking was the Ghouls in Space quest, but it felt marred by a lot of fedexing and a "choice" at the end which was just lame.
Not everything has to have choice and consequence for me to enjoy it, but if many of the choices are false choices it seems pretty lame across the board when choice and consequence are put front and center. |
