In honor of the official recognition of the Fussbett Fable scale let's do an article outlining games that are below-average to shit in the gameplay department, but their beautiful art design nevertheless makes up for the gameplay shortcomings and compelled you to finish it anyway.
Note that this does NOT include games where the quality of the writing makes up for gameplay weaknesses, or we'll be posting an article telling gamers about this obscure title they may have missed out on called "Planescape: Torment"
Here's a short list off the top of my head. I'm sure more will come to mind later:
The Dark Spire (DS):
As mentioned in the article, a game out of japan with nothing anime about the artwork and nightmarish visuals straight out of suspiria wedded to an archaic combat system that belongs in the dustbin of history.
Solatorobo (DS):
Every single screen of this zelda sorta kinda game is beautiful and unique in some way. Hats off to the art team, they made a game to rival Ninja Gaiden in the looks department without Resident Evil-style cheating. Sadly the term "insultingly easy" is completely warranted in this game, emphasis on the insulting. Insulting as in you enter a room, there's a crate and a gigantic pulsing red button on the floor, but before you can even do anything an NPC tells you over the radio in a multiple-line conversation that you should try putting that crate on the button. Still more fun than Spirit Tracks, if for no other reason than the stylus and microphone are never touched in this game. Prettier, too.
Genesis Rising (PC):
Takes place in a distant future where humanity has pretty much become Ridley Scott's engineers and fly grotesque slimy organic spaceships with blinky lights that grow proboscises and suck the blood out of the carcasses of their defeated enemies after the end of a battle. Sadly this action controls like Freedom Force if all the levels took place in (very pretty) vacant lots.
Any other games to suggest? |
