Velvet Assassin, perhaps? by MM 07/15/2013, 7:25pm PDT
I just picked it up this afternoon for a $1.25 at Gamersgate.

If I hadn't recently had the view-changing experience of being disappointed by "Stealth Bastard" I probably would have hated this game because it's a completely linear collection of stealth puzzles in the worst possible way. Although I'm still very early in the game so things might pick up later.

But the ambiance and setting! This doesn't feel like a WWII game, it feels like a horror game. The weird lighting, oftentimes intentionally set up so the shadow of a guard in nazi helmet looms gigantic around the corner. One grunt asks a recent transfer "Is it true what I heard, that they're doing... experiments there?" and the transfer responds all creepy. In fact everyone in this game acts a little touched in the head, especially the protagonist. OF COURSE WWII is the perfect setting for a horror game, but it never felt like that in videogames before.

Just my first impressions, but I'm very impressed.

It's been over a year since I built this computer, but it still blows my mind that a game this beautiful requires me to install Legacy PhysiX drivers to play.
