You're vulnerable because it's dark, you can only have a limited number of flares burning at once, and while you can kill any number of Xenomorphs when you have a clear bead on them, if one slips past your defenses you're dead. THAT'S how you make a player vulnerable in videogames. Not by making the game a chore to control.
