TDARCOS rambling:
I really loved Perl when I started programming, as Java was a verbose pile, and C++ was equal parts inscrutable and error-prone. Especially C++ for windows, holy shit. C was and is nice, but wasn't appropriate for the web stuff I was doing, and it feels like moving atoms around with tweezers after using a higher level language. PHP was always a degenerate form of Perl, but you could run it on any hosting plan anywhere, and it was very quick to throw together an application with despite its shit nature.
Ruby became popular after that, then became mainstream due to Rails. I love Ruby, but it is so goddamn slow. SO SLOW. Python had always been simmering in the background as well (for me, boiling in the foreground for others). I have not programmed enough python to form an opinion, but I've read enough to know that it's not the font of beauty its proponents claim. Very readable, though, which is probably better.
I'd finally gotten to the point where dynamic languages irritate me when Go came around. Go is dumb and fast and can almost trivially utilize multiple threads. I like it, but wish it weren't quite so dumb (generics pls). That covers server-side, but with the browser there is only one choice: Javascript. You can compile other things to Javascript, though, and people have. Compiling to Javascript became so popular that it finally got a binary format, webasm, that is being worked on together by Google, Mozilla, and Microsoft. Soon enough you'll just be able to change your compiler target to webasm and have your shit run in a browser. So, Javascript may suck, but it has taken over, and you don't even have to exactly use it.
I also occasionally fiddle with Lisp because I am a pervert.
