Pac-Man homebrew, Atari 800 by Ice Cream Jonsey 08/31/2019, 9:48pm PDT
I don't know if any of you guys follow any "homebrew" scenes at all. As I am coming to grips that I primarily like games made from 1970-2000, I do follow this stuff. I am trying to get all the home consoles, within reason, playable at my home and what I lacked was a version of Pac-Man that was acceptable for the Atari 800.

The man on this thread made an arcade-perfect version of Pac-Man for the Atari 800. I had to have it IN cartridge form. I added myself to a wait list and waited two years.

After two and a half years, I bumped the thread in order to get my goddamn cart. And I did! And it is amazing! And perfect!

That's on an Atari 800! Granted, it's not the 2600, but still, that's amazing.

None of this is what I actually want to talk about in this thread. In fact, I want to talk about a subject and I specifically want the input of caltrops posters and lurkers.

So, I feel pretty goddamn POWERFUL in getting that cart made. I got added to a waiting list. Two and a half years passed. I moved. I decided my room was lacking a real Pac-Man cart, so I offered to buy the second copy to get the waiting list cleared to get it made. The dude that made it doesn't work for Namco, but it exists now and I have a copy and all is right with the world. I didn't even have to buy the second copy, I just let time elapse and offered to fund it (it would have been 82 bucks if I bought both copies) and the thing now existed. I didn't program shit. I just put up money. And given almost three years, I assume everyone here can get their favorite game made acceptably in homebrew form if that amount is 82 bucks, so this isn't, I hope, a class thing.

My question is - I felt like a goddamn billionaire initiating this. How the fuck are actual billionaires not doing this? How are they not shaping the world in the way that they want? What the fuck ARE they doing? Even if half the billion is spent in underground - well, now that Epstein is dead - above ground pedo rings, that's still half a billion for projects.

There are only two instances I am aware of.

1) I read an article about Bill Gates once where Bill and his friends and family wanted to get a pizza delivered, but it was like 10:58PM and the pizza parlor they liked closed at 10:30PM. He called them up and was able to get them to bring the pizzas because he is a fucking billionaire.
2) Notch was going to fund Psychonauts 2 at 2 million bucks, but Tim of Legend asked for 18 and Notch backed out. Granted, if Tim had 18 million, he could have upgraded the sock puppet he used in the most cringeworthy standup act of all time, but that still would have left 16 million to make the game. I crunched some numbers, and 18 million for a guy like Notch that has a billion dollars is zero point something. I'd pay zero point something of my salary for Psychonauts 2 and I didn't even finish the first one.

There is a third. Every awkward Redditor in the world talks about athletes "building their brand" which, there are not words yet invented for making fun of a fucking sperging dickhead on Reddit speaking like they have a marketing PhD. Athletes get ripped off for dumb shit all the time, but I'm talking tech nerds here.

You guys know more about the world than me. I got a taste of this and it's consuming me. I know there are yachts and Lambos, but come on, how come there is no other evidence of a rich tech dickhead getting a sequel to the Blade Runner adventure game made, or Rocket Jockey 2 or whatever else? Explain it to me, this is all I would do if I had that money. I got a taste of being Mr. Peanut and it's addicting.
