I still remember the day in 2003 when Colin Powell presented forged documents about Iraq's nuclear program to the UN. The internet knew they were bullshit right away, because some Italian journalists bothered to investigate. That story wouldn't be picked up by the American media until after the war was over. Most people still got their news from TV back then, and the top anti-war story on CNN that day was a topless protest put on by a French UFO cult. I remember all this because that was the day I wrote a real angry message board post ranting about how a handful of old media corporations had the power to decide which information was credible, and I believed they were either abusing that power or they were somehow even dumber than I was - and I didn't even finish high school! I'm not super crazy about going back to that state of affairs but I guess if the new media corporations are right in this particular instance, then they'll always be right, and I should just get used to some news stories being cut out of existence for my protection. If someone doesn't like it they can always go off and use one of the many elite uncensored smart guy platforms, each one like a tiny little 2003 internet for the 2020 internet. Hey that can be Caltrops's new niche, a place where people go to share political news with six other people, and complain about indie game recommendations. |
