I am writing a book ("Marnie") and there are some places where there is dialog, which has an error. I realize that in the story, it works better if I leave the error, then lampshade it.
Here's one I noticed: A man is trying to explain somethimg tp his girlfriend:
“I?m a big believer that women can do just about anything a man can do, with limited exceptions.”
“Such as?”
“Anything requiring high upper-body strength, unless she?s trained to increase hers. Some technical fields in math and engineering, although that might be cultural, women might be discouraged to go into those fields. Oh, and the most significant, producing male children.”
“Just male children?”
“Yeah. All human eggs are female, type XX. The male gametes, the little swimmers in sperm, are either XX female or XY male. I?ll ignore the ones that aren?t either as they're minor and abnormalities. So, if a couple wants a boy and they end up with a girl, it?s all his fault. His balls didn?t manufacture enough male gametes to make it to her eggs.”
“You make it sound funny.”
“Well, if human beings reproduced through parthenogenesis, then...”
“Hold it, hold it, hold it, time out. What?s par... that word?”
“ Parthenogenesis. Par-then-ough-gen-e-sis. Asexual reproduction. If human beings reproduced that way, all babies would be born female.”
“Oh.”
“The man ‘decides? what sex the baby will be. Human beings have 46 chromosomes. 23 come from the mother?s egg and 23 come from the father?s gametes. The sex of the baby is entirely controlled by what the father delivers to the woman during mating.”
“'Mating.? Another quaint term.”
“I?m using it in a specific sense. I can?t say ‘fucking? because most sex acts involve contraception or the parents can?t conceive. I say....”
“Wait a minute. How can they be ‘parents? if they can?t concive?”
He facepalmed, and laughed. “You got me dead to rights. I said it wrong, and you're right, sorry."
