GC3 is good and I personally wouldn't go back to 2. It's had a really weird history, which I've talked about in these posts. But some of my favorite games have been in the various iterations of 3. (That said, I bet I have more hours playing 2 under my belt than 3 even now.)
But in a sense GC2 IS the gold standard, in terms of where Gal Civ was and from which it seems to be running as hard as it possibly can. The beam/mass driver/missile vs shields/armor/point defense mechanic is going away soon, and we've already seen the departure of a real map that can be viewed as a cohesive galaxy. The idea of making spaceships and *seeing them fight* has been on life support and might not be a thing in later versions. They seem hell bent on making this the dumb version of Stellaris.
Maybe Brad has a vision of where he wants to take this franchise, but I kinda suspect he does not. |
