A solid inaugural effort from Mr. Pixels, the movie succeeds primarily on the strength of its lead actors and the filmmaker's confidence with the material. Fans of Kane's Backrooms Youtube series will feel right at home, as at times it feels just like an extended, spruced up Youtube episode. The drawback there is that there are few surprises in store for the OG fans, other than the fact that he got to make a whole goddamn movie, and got really good performances out of his leads, and made A24's highest grossing film right out of the box.
The story about the movie itself and Kane Parsons' story arc will always be more astonishing than the film could have possibly been.
The 'rooms themselves have never looked better. If I were to nitpick, I am a man who enjoys movies that embrace a languid pacing, but here, the languidity occasionally feels a bit much. It is right to slow down and very deliberately explore the oddities and liminality of the Backrooms. However, several scenes with people looking scared for a full minute before daring to put their hand through the wall, may begin to drag a bit.
The story is a bit thin, and though nobody wants a movie to explain the Backrooms, it feels as if there might have been a little meat left on that bone.
This review sounds negative, which it isn't. Those are minor quibbles, elaborated upon here just to prove that as a Kane Parsons/Backrooms fan I'm not just here to suck indie cock. I love the Backrooms, and so does the filmmaker, and that shows through in every frame. I will watch it again and again.
When this was announced, I was hoping against hope that it wouldn't be an embarrassment, a crappy B-movie made by a pimply teenager just to service the nerd fans. It is far from that. It's a real, honest-to-god Backrooms movie, and a good one.
Kane is an inspiration to everyone, or at least should be. Good job, you pimply teenag-- well, excuse me, he can almost drink legally now.
