Forum Overview :: The Backrooms

I love how the movie teases a redemption and/or romance arc with Clark and Mary, and then yanks it away. This is the Backrooms. We're not redeeming SHIT here.

I also thought that the amount of explanation of the Backrooms given was exactly the right amount. The lore drop in the middle, that the Backrooms is just making slop copies of everything and everyone, just felt right. It's also extremely topical in the age of AI (not that movies have to be topical, but...)

The performances out of the actors are great. Kane puts a lot of care into everything, clearly. We also see something here that a lot of modern movies have forgotten -- cinematography. Dramatic pauses. People reacting realistically and not always rationally to events. In an age of jump-cuts and shaky-cam, here is a director who will just slow down a bit and let us take in the fucking scene, when appropriate.

If there's anything I would have changed, it might have been to cut the subplot about Mary's mother. It wasn't bad, per se, but it didn't feel necessary to the story. The part about her being a therapist was excellent, though. A therapist trying to make sense of an insane world.

The ending was obvious sequel-bait, but it also felt entirely appropriate. This is the backrooms. Nothing is ending. Nothing CAN have an end. It's not going to be OK.
