The digital thingies, on the other hand, wanted more than just Snakes... they wanted to be able to make any kind of person. Damned if I can remember the full rationale (I was boggling my way through all that shit, just like everybody else) but it was something about information being control or them not trusting weak humanity or information society or some bullshit like that.
The idea was to create an AI model (GW, which uses the colonel's face and voiceprint in the Big Shell mission) that could second-guess and manipulate the general population through planted ideas and suggestions. The AI had to come up with possible explanations for things Raiden told it that didn't make sense - "The terrorists must have brought it in with them." "The president was cooperating with them, but they're also about to get rid of him, so he'll probably tell you what you need to know." It also had to keep him focused and make sure he stayed on track. This made for a bunch of "Hurry up and go here" sort of dialogue.
Raiden was chosen for the test because he was weak and insecure and avoidant, like the majority of the population. They knew if the AI could convince him that everything was alright and manipulate him into completing the mission even with all this weird inconsistent shit going on, the program would be a success and they could start implementing it in everyday life to indirectly control normal people.
Shadow Moses was chosen as a paradigm because the events there invoked a broad range of emotions from Snake, so it was a good test to see if their super-duper complex AI program with it's millions of lines of code and variables, and no pre-recorded knowledge of what's going to happen, can placate Raiden and keep him going throughout his mission. And of course it fucked up somewhat whenever Raiden mentioned Snake, because it was programmed to make sure Raiden completed his mission without any help.

The aggravating part is that I still think he could have done it properly. I'll agree he screwed it up, but it's even worse for being theoretically possible.
There were a lot of poor choices in editing and pacing in this game. The ideas are solid enough but you really have to bring yourself to excuse the stupid things that for some reason weren't fixed before the game was released. And figuring out what it all means is like a fucking scavenger hunt that nobody wants to do, especially thanks to that last sneering, arrogant conversation that sounds suspiciously like Hideo making fun of you for thinking this game was going to be good.
Hurf, I still think it's good. But it definitely has problems. |
