Over the past weekend I watched both Alien and Aliens, and, though James Cameron's sequel is a lot more violent (making it objectively better than Ridley Scott's original), subjectively Alien is the best of the bunch.
Specifically, the direction and especially the production design is just way, way better. Alien creates an amazingly believable futuristic space cruiser. It is not at all hard to imagine that their ghetto space cruiser is really how teamsters of the future will travel. Their amusingly room-sized computer Mother is a great addition as well, because of that awesome noise that she makes.
On the flip side, the alien itself is kind of funny looking... it's definitely just a guy in a suit. When he gets the Captain, it looks like he's lonely and just wants a hug. But the sequence leading up to that is the best part in all 4 movies.
Also, the score was much better, but we're talking about a cage match between Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner, so, what can you expect.
This is a reversal from me: If you're only going to see one, see the first one.
