The Lionheart FAQ wrote:
Q: Is Lionheart party based?
A: Yes and no. You create one character at the beginning of the game. During the course of the game you will be able to allow some other characters in the world to join your party and adventure with you for some quests, but this is your choice. You will also be able to summon magical allies to aid you during combat.
Anyone know the hard upper limit for how many characters you can have in your party?
That's a real noncommital answer from the FAQ, BTW. Sounds like you get some jerk to help you (or you're helping him) rid his land of whatfuckingever, then he leaves after the quest is done. I've never been a big fan of having an ever-changing rotation of party members, not in a level-based RPG where they always gyp you on the levels on your joining NPCs. No, jerkoff, being 3 levels below me doesn't really work.
I don't like that whole "summon magical allies" bit either, now that I think about it. Not as a substitution for pre-rolled guys. The Allies that I am personally familiar with at least stuck around and occupied West Berlin when the fighting was over. I suspect that the genie djinni I conjur up will leave as soon as the fighting is finished (or, if you dawdle and the game is like BG, as soon as the fighting is pretty much finished).

Why wait until VI? IV was just as bad (unless you meant IV). I loved how the first guy you got was Iolo the bard. If I was adventuring the countryside, the first guy I'd want by my side is a fucking bard. Who am I, Groo the Wanderer?
Hee, hee. Yeah, exactly. Groo also had that dog with him (who brings more to the table than Iolo ever could) and wasn't tied down into eternal awfulness with those codecs and virtues and shit. If Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier ever got ten minutes to work their magic on the Ultima universe, well, let's just say that Dupre's chief use to the party wouldn't be gritting the path back to town and Blackthorn wouldn't have made it around for four sequels with his head still nicely attached to his neck.
