My 'traditional' character is essentially a tribal wood elf with very limited defensive magic (I went tribal, seemed to make sense), and ultra-agility/evade oriented towards swordsmanship and stealth. Some of you know the name I use for him (my AIM name). Tribal magic works great in this game, as all of the corpses of your enemies become health for you to consume thanks to the protection line of spells. Mana wells MORE than make up for your magic needs. I'm blowing through this game without getting scratched so fast it hurts (and without using those red bonus spheres, just the occasional mana spirit) it hurts.

Notes on the traditional SB character in other games: The weapon I use for him isn't in any game that I've ever seen (it's something of my own invention), so I always try to approximate as much as possible - imagine three parallel, metal blade-housings (mounted on a full-forearm gauntlet with a grip for the right hand that controls the retractable blades in the housings) running the top of the forearm (if your forearms are in a typing position), with small metal fins along the top into which notches are cut to service as a forearm-mounted swordbreaker. From these housings two retractable scimitar-like blades project forward slightly less than two feet beyond the fist, and one blade projects backwards from the elbow an equal distance.
Thus, a weapon that can be used for blocking, stabbing/slashing in either direction, and sword breaking all simultaneously. On the underside of the gauntlet is sheathed a dagger for the left hand (handle facing the right hand for quick cross-draws), and a small mace that ends in a single point (think an 18" halberd but with an iron ball instead of a blade, but still has the point on the reverse side) on one side hangs from either side of the character's waist, handle pointing up for a quick draw by either hand. Two daggers are mounted across the top of the character's chest, handle pointed toward each shoulder for a quick draw (the left one slightly lower) by the left hand, three small throwing knives on the underside of the left shoulderpiece for the left hand, and one rather large short sword is strapped to the left thigh for the left hand.
Really, regardless of what fantasy game I play, I always try to approximate this as closely as possible - several daggers/throwing knives, a short sword, a small mace, and most importantly some kind of claw weapon. Pity I can't get the latter in Lionheart so far, nor does there appear to be dual-wield so I could at least do a scimitar/short Sword combo.
