It's true that the unwashed masses tend to be "against abortion" in some vague way, but would never put any teeth behind their "eww gross" reaction. This whole 5 years with no exceptions thing is definitely not going to go down well with the nation at large, and I suspect that even filthy ignorant South-Dekotans will end up feeling pretty negative about it.
Whether pro-life advocates would actually stand behind their talk isn't relevant to whether it's democratic or not. From early in the 20th Century until the late 1960s conducting abortions was a crime in all 50 states. When Roe was handed down, abortion was legal on demand in 4 states and available with various qualifications in 13 others, while it was still highly restricted in the remaining states. This regime was a product of voter choice, mostly through state legislature elections, but also through a handful of referenda. Then nine men chosen at the whim of president, including one appointed during the FDR administration, stepped in and decided the people weren't entitled to make the decision.
At the WHIM of the president!! How dare he!!
They were also vetted and approved by the congress, which was elected by the people, including those in South Dakota.
Anyway, we're not talking about a democracy where every decision is left to the (whim of the) people. We're talking about the USA, which takes its governmental structure from the constitution, which provides for a Supreme Court, which has the power to act against the alleged will of the majority. And sometimes does, whether the individual represenatives of the populace like it or not. |
