I played four games of this during the halftime show and after the game itself. I was expecting some level of nonsense along the lines of NFL Blitz, but it was actually a lot of fun.
I tried the "pickup" mode. You start off by choosing seven guys for your team. The same seven play offense and defense, thus resulting in more strategy than I've seen in a football game in a long, long time. It was like NES Hockey. Do you pick three receivers and no cornerbacks? If you pick a slow QB like Peyton Manning you'll have a cannon for an arm, but will he be a complete liability on defense? Should you take some beefy defensive ends to pass rush at the expense of pass blocking, or vice versa? Additionally, not every player is available for every pickup game. There seemed to be four quarterbacks that you could pick from that were randomly determined before the start of each game, so I ended up with Carson Palmer (twice), Rich Gannon and Manning for the games that I played. A great feature, really -- some guys who are rather brainwashed (like myself) feel some inane sense of loyalty to their team and it feels like we're sleeping around if we don't pick our own franchise or players from our favorite team all the time. I couldn't get Joe Horn and so forth, because they were never randomly selected as being available. It's like this game was telling me it was okay to go out, get drunk and "swing."
You play in a number of different non-stadium venues. I'm guessing. I'm not really sure because you have to unlock an enormous amount of shit in the game. You start off being able to play on a beach and in what looks like some weeds. Not all fields have the same dimensions, some have shit like beachballs and so forth kicking around, and there aren't any penalties that I could see. Thuggery, especially on a long lob, can only help you. The game's art is good for a chuckle or two, as the players aren't wearing pads and helmets, but instead shorts, t-shirts, camo pants, baseball caps and sandals and so forth. Seeing some of the league's, ah, whiter players decked out like they were minutes away from slicing off some other bitchass pimp's ear with a straight razor is a quality feature.
So anyway, it's definitely worth a rental. I'll probably grab it and see if there's enough depth there to be worth buying outright, but it's a fantastic party game. (TESTIMONIAL: I missed that Backstreet fag ripping Janet Jackson's bra off and I couldn't care less. )
