Normal game writers are terrible and incompetent because they lack the real-world breadth of knowledge to discuss games intelligently. They are also handicapped by their inability to do anything else and editors that are slaves to their advertisers, in all cases.
Journalists who do not normally cover video gaming are incompetent because they aren't qualified to speak on the subject. (They aren't qualified to write about much of anything, but it is only noticed by game players when they enter into that field.) Furthermore, while some journalists become self-parodies ("At first, I thought Colonization was a joke") they never understand this. There has not been a single case of a paid writer confessing to their complete ignorance on the subject.
So. When do we get to read good writing about games? What would have to happen for good game journalism to exist? |
