+1, this is dumb. What's worse is that later on you can burn a class ability to remove this restriction.
They could have done a lot better job on line of sight feedback. I have no clue who can see or shoot at what or what position I need to get into for a shot.
There are onscreen clues but they're subtle, it's been awhile since I played it but you can tell what the line-of-sight will be for the different positions. Managing line-of-sight is the most important aspect of the game by far.
My heavy weapons guy seems to have a longer range than my sniper, who I have been unable to even fire her weapon yet.
I don't think(?) that the different classes/weapons have different maximum ranges, it's just down to line of sight/how far you can see and then distance adds a modifier for chance to hit and a modifier for damage. The sniper - when he/she can take a shot - has lighter modifiers than short distance weapons but that doesn't mean he/she can see further. There is a class ability that lets snipers see what other team members see, though, and that makes them much more powerful.
This panic shit is really getting old. It overstayed its welcome the very first mission. It's like it's using the same formula as the original game, but it made more sense there to panic when you took 25% casualties in a turn because your squad was so huge. Here you're panicking every...single...time you lose a soldier, cutting your strength by half or more. What's worse is they don't just panic by freezing or running away, but by taking 2 steps towards the enemy and stopping out in the open.
I was really frustrated with this at first and then it went away completely as I got better at the game. The soldiers get braver as they get more experienced. In general, the first few missions are the hardest because you have shitty weapons and sissy soldiers, but once you have a few guys leveled up it those frustrations go away, which kind of makes sense, your guys are freaking out because they're getting blown up by aliens for the first time.
Top level strategy tips:
Don't let any countries leave
Get energy weapons before the Mutons show up or you're fucked
Never ever use grenades
Most of the time, having a shotgun soldier sprint up to a guy and shoot him in the mowf is a great tactic, try to create that situation
