First of all, Clash of Heroes is nothing like an SRPG version of Tetris Attack, so stop trying to play it like either of those things! It's more like Magical Drop for babies meets Magic: The Gathering for babies, with the takeaway being that this game is 100% for babies. So if you ever find yourself losing battles, you're obviously doing something very wrong. Here are some tips to get you on the right path:
1. You know you can customize your forces, right? If you're having trouble getting any traction with elite units, just go ahead and bench them for now. Archers are the easiest units in the game to use because they have the shortest charge time, and by extension require the least planning. So maybe try a force of nothing BUT archers? Don't think of them as "low level units" like in a SRPG, think of them as 1/1 creatures with a 1 mana casting cost like in M:TG.
2. Columns of units become attacks, rows of units become walls. If you can form more than one column and/or row with a single move, you get a free bonus move. There will never be an easier time to score bonus moves than on the first turn, when your board is full and none of your units are otherwise engaged. Often, it's as easy as deleting a single unit! Don't worry about cluttering up your board with walls - they stack automatically, and a fully-stacked wall provides an excellent defense:space ratio.
3. Speaking of defense, remember that a charging column absorbs more damage than a stack of disparate units. Every turn they gain hit points, which become damage when the attack goes off. This also means that every hit point of damage you manage to inflict on a charging enemy column is one less it will have to inflict on you.
4. On offense, link your attacks. Attacks are considered linked if they trigger on the same turn. The more attacks you have launching at once, the more powerful each individual attack will be. This is like the core of the game so I assume they would've covered it in the tutorial, but I honestly have no idea because I skipped the tutorial because the ESRB rating on the box was just a picture of a pacifier with a checkmark next to it.
5. DO NOT try and savescum. The loading times in this game are fucking ridiculous (at least they were on 360, I guess high-def 2D artwork takes up a lot of RAM or something?) and the penalties for failure are practically nonexistant. If you lose an elite, you probably had no idea what to do with it anyway, and you will finish every campaign with more money than you can possibly spend. So relax! Later chapters even introduce random battles, in case you're REALLY desperate to do some completely pointless grinding.
6. DO do the Battle Puzzles as soon as you have access to them. Not only are they probably the most challenging things in single player, they also teach you to recognize opportunities to score bonus moves. This is absolutely the kind of game where building your skills as a player is a better investment than making your numbers go up, and that's why I think you're eventually going to warm to it. |
