Remember Dear Esther was released in 2012, just the previous year. The idea of walking around and doing stuff WITHOUT SHOOTING just felt really fresh at that particular moment in time. There were also just a lot fewer games out there, so people could make something like this and charge full price for it.
Of course, as you said, the games journalism sites were at the height of their power and influence. They loved The Stanley Parable because it made them feel clever.
If the Stanley Parable were released today it probably wouldn't be noticed in the sea of indie games. Honestly a single dev could probably put something like that together in a few weeks without trouble in Unreal. The hardest part would be getting the cool British voice actor. |
