| I was going to put together a list of my top 100 games after reading this post and deciding to reveal my terrible tastes (beyond the top 10 I posted years ago in that thread). So I compiled a list of every game I could remember playing so I wouldn't overlook anything when putting together my top 100. In the meantime, I thought I'd share this list so you can now see everything that has informed my terrible terrible taste.
I'd say the console and handheld stuff is about 99% accurate. PC stuff is sketchier because I can't recall everything I played in the 90s, nor a bunch of old Apple IIe games I played in grade school during computer lab. I can remember some games, but not enough to find out what the name was. For example, some Apple IIe game with time travel, and a mid-90s PC game with prerendered background that has some medieval magic and dragons motif. If you see any shocking omissions for either PC or console (ie. Doom, Doom 2), that's probably not an oversight. Some big games I just never played. I did include some demos and browser games, but tried to limit it to ones I either completed, spent significant time with, or were otherwise noteworthy. I also tried to limit duplicating games I played on multiple platforms, unless there were significant differences. I probably have a couple accidental duplicates. Sports games, strategy games, and fighting games are vastly underrepresented. Sports games because I never was really interested in the sim ones (JOOOOOOOOOOOOCKS!!!!!!), and strategy and fighting games because I'm usually terrible at them. I never owned a PlayStation, and only played games on it my friend owned. No one I went to college with owned one either. I bought a PS2 and PS3 late in their life cycle, and I bought a Dreamcast when it was like $50 after Sega announced it was discontinuing hardware and stores were liquidating their stock, so that's why there's so few games on those. There are some games I own, but haven't played yet. Like an unopened copy of Red Dead Redemption, and a few PS2 games. I was surprised at the shorter list of arcade games! In retrospect though, I could only play arcade games when I went to the mall, and I was at the mercy of my parents giving me quarters. I don't have the greatest memory in history to recall all of these off of the top of my head, all of the console lists are on Wikipedia. PC games are from my Steam list + memory. Metafilter has like every PC game ever, but fuck if I'm going to scroll through 900 pages of games. I looked through PC Gamer's Top 100 games to see if there was anything that I might be forgetting, and their list is objectively terrible.
