The problem with the Genesis library is the SNES was almost always the lead platform for games that mattered - Japanese ones - because the Mega Drive sold like medium or larger condoms over there. Like in SFII, where Capcom used the low-res mode on the Genesis (256 wide instead of 320) so they wouldn't have to redraw the sprites from the SNES (which was permanently stuck in low-res mode) after they already redrew them once from the CPS arcade board (384 model-thin pixels baby!).
It looks like they made a token effort at parity by adding a few more animated figures to the backgrounds on the Genesis; you can see the arcade version's flagman and gropeslut riding an Air Force-issue olive drab portable fight cooler in the youtube thumbnail, and I imagine the ugly dithering on that sunset was supposed to all blur together over composite. So the graphics are an obvious win for the SNES, and the arranged SNES music will never not sound 'righter' to me than the more arcade-accurate Genesis synth. I should still probably make an effort to see if it feels any smoother in play before writing it off entirely.
However, if you've ever seen the beta ROM, you know how much even less effort Capcom was planning to put in before Sega browbeat and cajoled them into doing their fucking jobs for once. Those good early-gen Capcom ports (Strider, Mercs, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, maybe Forgotten Worlds if they figured out how to map a rotating stick to three buttons) were all programmed in-house by Sega under license (or farmed out to competent shadow developers without credit, how would I know). Capcom still didn't give a shit about the Mega Drive even after selling millions of copies of Genesis SFII to stupid big-dicked gaijin, and the quality of the later Super SFII port nobody wanted suffered for it.
Picture a version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo ported directly from the arcade, instead of by way of SNES, taking advantage of all the Genesis' unique strengths (not colours) and greater similarity to the original hardware. Nobody would've bought it because by '94 Sega fans were busy investing all their money in disappearing trick platforms, but it would've given the little black box an appropriately big black dong to whip out in youtube console cock-waving contests. I need to stop typing now before the next paragraph is just ASCII art of penises, that is how much Street Fighter port details get my blood pumping. |
