| Back in the heyday of Tumblr there was a particularly bad genre of posts saying things like “Why can’t there be a comic book thing where the heroes just hang out in a big house together and braid each other's hair?”
That is this game. And maybe that would be a good game if the writing was good. But the writing is bad. And the pacing is bad And the characters suck. In between the battles you hang out in a mansion. The story takes pains to point out that it is in a special pocket dimension, A “safe space”, if you will, where you never need to worry about getting attacked. And the goal in the mansion is to raise your friendship points with all your Marvel favs! Which is mostly just chatting, but also exciting activities like: Book Clubs Mediation Organizing Surprise Parties It’s a friendship system designed by guys who design strategy games. And again, the writing sucks. At least the mansion is relatively compact so you don’t have to waste a bunch of time running all around a giant hub. Combat System A major problem with trying to make an “MCU Tactical Game” is that the MCU makes no fucking sense. You have demi-gods fighting alongside a human girl who just kicks real good. And the MCU movie action scenes suffer for it. So, credit to Firaxis for trying to come up with a system that would result in battles that kinda resemble the movie fights. All battles take place in a roughly 50 meter circle. There are random pieces of scenery scattered around. Each round you draw until your hand has six cards. You can play three cards each round. Mostly the cards are either “attack” cards that do damage and gain “hero points”, or “hero” cards that do lots of damage, and use those hero points. You can also move 1 character, which is mostly used for lining up knockback attacks So most battles play out like a movie fight scene. The heroes start out knocking out cannonfodder goons with one punch, and then, unleash their big super-saiyan on the boss And since the attacks you get are randomized by the card draw you don’t just fall back on the obvious OP attacks. So, it’s kinda like a movie fight scene I guess. “Strategy System” You choose a mission from the map board, You can choose from some randomly generated encounters, or from a story mission. There’s no strategic reason to choose one or the other except for a slight variation in the reward. Heroes you ignore will be auto-leveled up even if you don’t bring them on missions. Just bring your favs! No penalties! All enemies will be balanced to your hero levels anyway, so don’t worry about making a bad strategic choice! The only strategy seems to be in deciding what cards you want to upgrade, and husbanding resources to upgrade them. But the battles are so easy, and again, enemies are are auto-leveled, so it doesn’t really matter Other Complaints I did 2 boss battles. Both against Venom. And both ended with Spider Man doing something totally un-related to the fight to defeat him. So why did I even have the fight? I didn’t need to wear down Venom so Spidey could deliver a coup-de-grace - the writers just wrote a completely unrelated story to the one I’m playing Gave up after 8 or so hours |
