| Nope, right from the start you outright get main story objectives with your social anxiety main character running to go pout in his bedroom. Multiple characters come up to explain to you how this is a safe space where everyone can share their feelings and power of friendship. You are forced into movie night with totally a film nerd manic pixie girl who launches straight into daddy issues.
There's a genre of novels called "cozy mysteries". It's for senior women who think Murder She Wrote had too much conflict and violence. They're supposed to be murder mysteries, but 95% of the plot is mundane routines of the protagonist running a bakery, or boring mundane conversations about what they did on their last vacation cruise, or boring mundane gossip about the grandkids of every acquaintance in town. They're known for being deathly allergic to any kind of tension. When any kind of conflict or danger is introduced, it's immediately dispelled within 3 whole paragraphs. Murderers and mafia hitmen are toothless against local bakers and quilting circles. That's what came to mind as I played this. They had a chance at a minimal amount of pathos with the main character. You wake up from a centuries long coma. Your MILF mentor is now an old bag, and your bestie comrade is dead, incinerated in an accident trying to teach Scarlet Witch to control her powers. This could be the source of some kind of sorrow, grieving, or resentment toward Wanda. Everything was torn away from your character and you never got any chance to say goodbye. Except you immediately walk up to your bestie's grave and she comes back as a ghost and right out of the gate takes the same Joss Whedon "allergic to sincerity" quirky Marvel cookie cutter dialog tone as every other character. "No big deal. I like being a dead ghost more than I did being alive, so there's no need to worry or be mad at Wanda. Let's swap some quips." Pathos immediately dispelled! Do you want to debate zombie movies at the next hangout? There's probably half a dozen X-MEN arcs that would have worked better for this safe space hideout setting. I have no idea why they went with one where half the cast are centuries old immortals who have seen all kinds of shit and witch hunts and genocides and wars and Lovecraftian horrors, yet talk to each other like everyone is the mental health counselor at the most coddled private university. This writing is SO bad. It's Bioware meets Marvel and the writers don't have the talent to clear the low bar for either. |
