Ah, computer history. That guy gives Gibson too much credit, but maybe he's just simplifying for the sake of the story.
Anyway, I love that asshole editor he talks to, the skinny one with no pupils. "Computers are cheap, anyone who really wants one can get one." My folks paid $1500 for a 486 with a 15" monitor and gave it to me for Christmas in 1993. Thank God they did, though, since with it I was able to get a magical University email account (to correspond with my brother who was in Japan) and play Doom. And oh yeah, type up some papers and shit. And let everyone else in the dorm type up papers and shit. Best $1500 ever spent. (Before that, in 1988, they spent ~$1500 for an 8088 with a CGA monitor.) But still WAY more than I could have possibly afforded back then. In fact, I've only spent $1500 bucks on any one thing just once in my life so far, and it was for another computer. My car cost less than that (and it shows!) |
