Ok, that's the other thing I left out, perhaps as an addendum. After I posted the original complaint and prepared to cry myself to sleep, I read their forums(which have no tech support) and noticed a number of other testers having lockup problems, many of them ATI users. Immediately it occured to me that practically every developer builds the graphics engine around Nvidia harware and works their way to ATI boards at some point later on. I think. Anyways, I nabbed the most recent driver from their site, with which mine was concurrent, and reinstalled it.
I then decided to the the game one last go-around, fully prepared to make a concession if I could have a chance to get into it. I was about 40 minutes into a game, wandering mostly, until I finally caught up the the action and joined my first major battle. An assaulting force of around 50 for so baddies were charging our warpgate, and I gunned down two of them before I was overcome by this feeling of detachment and waning interest from what I was doing. In the middle of a firefight I stood motionless as I activated the chat console to ask "does this game ever get fun?" and, swear to God, as I hit the enter key CHHHHHHK!**BLUESCREEN**REBOOT*.
I mean fuck, Sony. It was just a question.
a) find yourself a regular outfit ASAP. Nothing formal, nothing fancy - just people who actually play frequently together. The fun goes way, way up.
b) Make sure you have the Mosquito or Reaver Certs. I cannot emphasize this enough. Wait, yes I can:
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE FUCKING MOSQUITO OR REAVER CERTS
This is a very, very big game. You need to be able to go places quickly. With the Mosquito cert you can get from anywhere to anywhere in the game within three minutes - and you're invisible to radar which is really nice if you're playing an infiltrator and HALO dropping over a base with active turrets.
c) pick up an extra cert right at the start by hitting VR training. Just trying out each of the weapons/MAX suits/Vehicles will automatically get you to Battle Rank 2. This is the first thing you do out of the door with a fresh character. The next thing you do is hit the cert terminal in the HART building and grab 'Mosquito' and 'Medium Assault' skills. The next thing you do is dive into the action with your 'Looking For Squad' fag-tag flagged (say that three times fast).
d) Hacker cert is useful to have. A MAX cert is probably more fun, and since MAXs don't have to worry about anything other than a) there being a tower nearby to spawn at (mitigated by their auto-run ability) and b) shooting everything to shit, once you've gotten to BR5, pick up a MAX skill. If you're Vanu this goes double since their MAXs are the only units in the game with jumpjets. Also, one of their MAXs has both AP and normal ammo - whichever one it is, use that one. If you're TR, use the Cycler (the Anti-Vehicle one). If you're NC, don't bother being a MAX - go get either a Vanguard or a Phoenix cert and have yourself a ball.
BR8 is not at all difficult to get to, as NC go with the following:
1) 3 Mosquito
2) 2 Medium Assault
3) 3 Phoenix Cert (special assault?)
4) 3 Reinforced armor so you can switch between Gauss and Phoenix
As TR wait until BR9 and try:
1) 3 Mosquito
2) 2 Medium Assault
3) 4 Chaingun
4) 2 points on whatever you want (Infil? AMS?) or wait until BR9 and get another skill (at BR12 the Chain/Stryker with Reinforced armor combo is fucking deadly)
As VS at BR8 - I have no clue, but probably:
1) 3 Mosquito
2) 2 Medium Assault
3) 3 That AP/normal Uber-MAX they've got
4) 3 - have not played the VS far enough to know the answer to this, sorry.
Vehicles that are not a fucking waste of your time:
Mosquito or Reaver (personally I'm not big on the Reaver but I'm alone on that) - you must go faster.
Your side's primary tank
AMS
If you *MUST* go with mass transportation, I'd suggest ignoring the Galaxy and going with the Sunderer. Sunderer provides some very nice mobile artillery, transports a decent amount of people (7? 9?) and two MAXs - coordinating all 15 people in a Galaxy is a recipe for disaster until you've got a very stable, tightly-coordinated outfit. Even then it's a PITA.
Hope this helps. I personally think this game is nowhere near as fun as it used to be thanks to the implementation of the lattice system - changed it from a real game into yet another MMO treadmill, or at least significantly nudged it in that direction. Hopefully they'll have it repaired by full release (hah!) and I'll be wrong, but I'm worried.
